Are you new to yoga?
Have you decided to start a Yoga practice and have no idea where to begin?
Not to worry, You have come to the right place!
Today, I will share with you some practical ways to embark upon your own unique yoga journey.
Create a time to practice.
This is totally catered to you. Depending on which route you choose for your practice there are a few different options.
For a Home Practice:
Find a time with the least amount of distractions.
I find the morning is best before starting daily tasks or going to work. In your home, many distractions can pull you off of your mat, so be sure to create a time that you can commit to. Even if it is only 10 minutes.
It is very tempting to get up from your mat and start a load of laundry, grab a drink, check an email that just came in, the list is utterly endless. It’s best to turn your phone on silent, play some soothing music, and dedicate time on your mat.
Alternatively, You could practice before going to sleep.
However, be cautioned, It’s easy to make up excuses like, “I worked super hard today and I need time to veg out.” It is even easier to lay in bed and scroll Instagram for an hour. (Hey, I am guilty of this one) Followed by an hour of restless thoughts accompanied by tossing and turning trying to go to sleep.
Yoga offers the benefits of helping the muscles relax to find a better night’s sleep. If you struggle to go to sleep or stay asleep, this option may be for you.
Keep this in mind to try out some different times and see which one best suits you!
Take a drop-in class at a local yoga studio or gym
Many studios offer affordable prices for drop-in classes, usually around $8-15. Many also offer discounts for first-time students. This is a great way to try out new studios and see which ones you jive with.
Check out some You-Tube videos
There are many varieties of teachers and styles offered on YouTube, the options are limitless. I vibe with Yogawithadrienne. https://www.youtube.com/user/yogawithadriene She has so many awesome videos for different moods on any given day. Have fun with watching different videos and styles and find someone you vibe with too.
Check out a book with beginner poses &/or breathing exercises
There are many options in local bookstores and tons to browse through online as well.
Here are some examples below.
Look into some meditation podcasts.
Here is one I really enjoy. There are tons on Youtube and many other platforms for free!
You do not have to practice for an entire hour.
This one is huge! Remember, each day is different. This is YOUR practice. Most likely if you choose to practice at a studio, classes are 60 minutes long.
However, if you are practicing at home, DO NOT feel like you need to do an entire hour.
There are plenty of videos out there ranging from 10 min and on. Any amount of practice time is more than NO practice time.
Finally, Have FUN!
No matter which options you choose to begin your Yoga Practice, it should be a joyful process.
Yoga is a gift you give to yourself. Accept it, embrace it, use it and be present through the entire range of emotions surrounding the practice.
Yoga serves us as a tool to connect deeper with our Divinity , so that we may find gratitude for the limited, precious time we have to inhabit our earth suits.
Remember, every day is different, every day is unique. Do not move on your mat today with judgment from yesterday or worries for tomorrow.
Move in unison with your breath, be here and now.
Thank you for taking the time to connect with me. I hope this gives you inspiration and motivation to continue exploring the vast lands of your Yogic Expedition.
